Nicola Sturgeon
First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party since 2014, Rt Hon Nicola Sturgeon was born in Ayrshire in 1970, the daughter of an electrician and a dental nurse. She grew up in the village of Dreghorn, listening to Duran Duran and spending her Saturday nights at Frosty’s Ice Disco in the neighbouring town of Irvine, but it wasn’t all frivolity for teenage-Nicola; she joined the Scottish National Party at just 16 years old. In 2015, she appeared on an episode of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, where she discussed everything from politics to The Proclaimers with presenter, and fellow Scot, Kirsty Young. When asked what her luxury item would be, castaway Nicola immediately plumped for a coffee machine.
